What's Holding You Back In Your Cleaning Business?
Have you ever had a dream that you just couldn't figure out? It happens to me all the time. But earlier this year I had a dream in which the message seemed very clear.
I was dreaming about getting lost while going home. I was wandering around, trying to get my bearings, feeling a bit scared and overwhelmed. That's because I knew that home was a long ways away and it would take me a while to get there since I was on foot. In my dream, I kept trying to walk faster but I just couldn't seem to do it! It felt like I was trying to walk in a swimming pool, where you feel as if you're walking in slow motion with the water holding you back.
What was holding me back?
When I woke up I instantly realized that the dream was a metaphor for something holding me back from where I wanted to go in my business!
Every year I have SO many things I want to accomplish but it always seems that just when I'm on the brink of finishing something I started, something else suddenly comes up that distracts me from completing projects. More and more things pile up until I feel completely overwhelmed and have a hard time moving forward. On top of that, the day-to-day activities of running the business often feel stifling to me. So much so, that I sometimes lose interest in doing the more creative, fulfilling things I love to do. So my dream was a huge subconscious warning going off in my head.
Have you ever had that feeling that something is holding you back from accomplishing your dream? What is it for you? Fear?
- Maybe you're afraid to quit your full time job to work on your cleaning business full time.
- Or maybe your business is taking off and you're still doing all the cleaning yourself when you KNOW you need to hire employees if you don't want your business to stagnate.
- Or perhaps you desperately want to take on larger accounts but worry that you won't be able to handle such large buildings so you stay with what you know.
For me, I knew it was time to put better systems into place and once and for all, release the tasks I knew I shouldn't be doing. The final piece of the puzzle for me was to more strategically grow our team to take over the day-to-day "stuff" that was bogging me down so I could focus on growing the company. Even though I've always had a good team, it simply wasn't big enough to move the needle on the business.
Steve and I started working on this together, by creating an Action Plan for each quarter and then breaking it into weekly tasks that help us accomplish our goals. We've done this on and off in our company in the past, but I'll admit that we weren't always consistent with it. This year is different. We have a new-found focus, our team is growing and we're completing projects. Better still, new opportunities have opened up for us because of the work we've done.
Yes, you can do it too! If YOU are the one that's holding you back, then do what we did. Hire others to do some of the things that (in your mind) only you can do. You'll be surprised at how many people want to help - if you'll only let them! You can grow your business if you just have a plan, create your systems and hire people to help you. I still have a ways to go, but I feel that I finally have some breathing room that will allow me to reach my goals for this year. No more letting outside influences hold me back!
