Why is drying time so important when applying finish to vinyl flooring?

When you don't allow a floor finish to dry thoroughly, moisture is trapped between the coats. This moisture needs to evaporate before the next coat is applied. If the next coat is applied too quickly, the coats aren't able to bond successfully, resulting in a dull floor, soil penetration, and easy scuffing.

There are two things you can do to aid in quicker dry time:

  • Apply medium coats - they dry quicker.
  • Avoid applying finish to floors in high humidity conditions if at all possible. Humidity causes finish to dry more slowly. Plus, high humidity means there's more moisture in the air, which in turn means the moisture in the floor finish can't evaporate, resulting in the problems listed above.

Floor finish normally dries in 30 minutes on average, but can take up to two or three hours in humid conditions. For best results, apply floor finish on less humid days, or make sure the air conditioning is turned on.
