Cleaning chemical safety guidelines recommended by OSHA:

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals. Instead use environmentally friendly products or cleaning chemicals that are not considered hazardous to the user.
  • Use automated dispensers for cleaning chemicals to avoid employee contact with chemicals.
  • Provide your employees with the appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) such as goggles and gloves when using cleaning chemicals. The goggles will protect their eyes from chemical splashes and the gloves will protect their hands from abosorption of chemicals.
  • Read and understand SDS sheets. Keep them in every janitor closet and vehicle that transports chemicals.
  • Ensure that chemicals that are not compatible with each other are not stored together (for example - ammonia and bleach should never be stored or used together). Check SDS sheets.
  • Every container needs to have a label. The label must contain: * the full chemical name * appropriate hazard warnings * name, address and emergency number of the manufacturer * protective measures to be used when handling the product
  • Avoid storing liquid chemicals and heavy containers on top shelves. Store them on lower shelves.
  • Dispose of chemicals properly. Read the SDS sheet for disposal instructions.
  • After cleaning, remove gloves and then wash hands. It is your job as employer to enforce chemical safety rules by providing your employees with chemical safety training. You must be diligent about this so yearly training is recommended. Would you like to learn more on how to work safetly on the job? Check out our Janitorial Employee Safety Program!
