Back in 1860, a man named Daniel Hess of West Union, Iowa, invented a carpet sweeper that collected dust by using a brush and bellow to create suction and thus, the first vacuum cleaner was born. The first motorized vacuum cleaners appeared at the turn of the 20th century and have come a long way in design, options and efficiency in the last 100 years. Now, the use of backpack vacuums is common place in commercial cleaning companies.

The cleaning industry is heavily focused on productivity and overall efficiency, and backpack vacuums have left the rest in the dust (pardon the pun). For those of you who have been out of the country for say, the last 20 years, here is a quick explanation of what a backpack vacuum is. The backpack vacuum is a canister type that is worn on the operator's back that attaches by use of a harness system.

Backpack vacuums are an excellent choice because they are light weight, easy to use and maneuver in tight, confined areas, such as hallways, stairwells, closet areas and under desks, where canister or upright vacuums become cumbersome and are heavy to operate.

Back packs have long extendable handles, lengthy power cords, and have a variety of attachments available, including dust brushes, crevice tools, scallop tools, floor brushes, and upholstery tools. All these features are designed to make vacuuming more productive. Not only can you vacuum carpet, you can use backpack vacuums for vacuuming hard floor surfaces, high dusting, vacuuming fans and vents, corners, or just about any nook and cranny the operator may encounter.

Another great aspect of the backpack is its proven outperformance of most canister or uprights when comparing production rates, adeptness, and overall proficiency. An ISSA study revealed that backpacks can cut vacuuming times by up to half over the traditional upright. The cleaning technician equipped with a backpack vacuum can move from carpet, to wood floors, to stone/ceramic tile, to vinyl floors without switching machines. And since they don't have the beater bars and belts typically found on most uprights, there is less repair or scheduled maintenance down time.
