What Types of Protective Gloves Should You Use In Your Cleaning Business?
As a responsible cleaning business owner, the safety of your employees and customers should be at the forefront of your daily operations. Concerns over cold and flu viruses, and other communicable diseases are rapidly growing. The use of disposable gloves in the janitorial industry is not new, but many are unaware of the types of gloves available and their uses. The most common types of disposable gloves are vinyl and latex. Vinyl gloves are made from a synthetic polymer, and are common in both food service and janitorial services. They are available with or without an added powder to make them easier to put on and take off, although some people have an allergic reaction to the powder. Vinyl gloves themselves are great for those with allergies, and are available in sizes small through extra-large, usually in boxes of 100. They tend to have a "looser feel" on your hand. Compared to some of the other choices, however, vinyl glove tend to be less durable. If the wearer has long fingernails or wears rings, there is a greater chance for rips and tears. In testing, they have been found to leak more than a higher grade glove. However, they are resistant to acids, fats, and alcohols, and make a good economical choice.
Latex is a natural rubber, therefore can be a problem for those with allergies. It has been determined that about 6% of the general public has some form of allergic reaction to latex. Unlike vinyl gloves, latex gloves are more "form-fitting"; to the hand and are also available in all sizes, both with and without powder. They are thicker and more durable than vinyl, and less likely to tear or puncture. They offer better leakage protection than vinyl, and many prefer the tighter feel they offer, allowing for increased sensitivity in performing tasks. Latex tends to be the most common disposable glove used in the janitorial industry.
A third type of glove is made of nitrile, another synthetic substance. These gloves offer the flexibility and durability of latex without the risk of allergies from latex. They are not quite as strong as latex nor as flexible, but they are more puncture resistant. They also are easier to put on and take off compared to latex, and are perhaps the most comfortable to wear. The downside of nitrile gloves is the cost, which is about twice that of vinyl and slightly more than latex. As nitrile gloves have become more commonplace, we have seen prices become comparable with those of latex, making them a viable choice for your cleaning needs.
The use of disposable gloves is one step you can take to help prevent the spread of disease. Latex and nitrile gloves are preferred for their ability to fit to the contours of the hand, making detail work easier. However, if cost is an issue, vinyl gloves will provide an adequate barrier to protect your cleaners from germs and viruses. As with any cleaning procedure, the proper use and removal of disposable gloves is an important part of your training program. The safety and welfare of your employees and customers come first.
