What is a Mastermind Group and Why Should You Join One?
You know what they say about free advice? It's worth every penny you pay for it! If we were to listen to everything that everybody told us, we would be all over the board with ideas. Let's face it: you don't know everything. Who do you listen to? Who do you trust? What makes person A's advice any better than person B's? If we all had crystal balls, the decisions we make might be much easier. Now it's time to enter the real world. Growing your cleaning business means you need the best advice available. Where do you get that from?
They say two heads are better than one. How about four heads? Or five? Even six? Since you aren't the mythological Hydra, you only have one. But you can access like-minded entrepreneurs through what is known as a Mastermind Group. A Mastermind Group is a collection of people who share similar goals and offer one another advice and support.
A key principle involved here is the concept of synergy. This is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of each of the parts. In the context we are looking at here, synergy is created when a group of people get together to share ideas, and the result is more than each person's individual efforts. A simpler way to think of it is teamwork. One obvious analogy comes from the sports world, where the “team” can score that touchdown or sink that basket, but the same group of people who are trying individually cannot.
A Mastermind Group can vary in size, but groups of 4 to 6 work out well. Members must be committed to the group for it to succeed. Groups can meet in person or on conference calls.
Members should share some of these common attributes:
- Similar interests
- Similar goals
- Similar skills
- Commitment
- A desire for success
What will you get out of joining a Mastermind Group? The answer to this question is limitless. You may get benefits out of joining that you may not have even thought possible, not only professionally, but personally. These are just a few things you might get from joining:
- A support network
- Years of knowledge and experience from different perspectives
- A sense of belonging
- New skill sets
- A sense of purpose
- SYNERGY
- Accountability
Commitment is the key to the success of a Mastermind Group. You need to attend and participate regularly, or you might find that the group will look elsewhere for another, more committed member. Confidentiality is a requirement. Each member must keep private information safe from the public. Being a member is not hard, but does require effort. Many find this sense of accountability a good thing, as it forces you to do the you need to.
