Developing efficient cleaning routes are essential to every cleaning business in order to maximize productivity. Every cleaning route needs to be tested and refined until the most efficient route is found for the facility or floor.

Every operations manager and/or supervisor should make sure that cleaning routes are outlined for every location you clean. With the tools available today it is easy to develop floor plans of every location you service. Develop floor plans with cleaning routes clearly outlined and post it in the janitorial closet so they can be used for training employees.

Every cleaning technician should know their cleaning routes. It is inefficient to let your employees try to figure it out on their own, and you want to make sure the route is the same no matter who is doing the cleaning that day.

You will develop cleaning routes for the Zone Cleaner, who will perform such tasks as trash removal, dusting, spot cleaning, restroom cleaning and vacuuming. You will also develop cleaning routes for the Sanitor (restroom specialist), for cleaning restrooms and mopping floors; and for the Utility Specialist for trash collection and other duties.

The Blended Cleaning System combines the best features of zone cleaning and some of the principles in team cleaning.

A single zone cleaner is left in their zone; their duties would be trash collection, dusting and vacuuming. In this example you can see the route the zone cleaner would take while performing their duties. They move in a circular motion around the floor taking the most efficient route.

TIP: Always test routes for efficiencies.

With the floor divided into 4 sections, 1, 2, 3, and 4, every Friday the Zone Cleaner will perform detail work or periodic cleaning tasks in that section and will continue to rotate the sections through the month until they are completed.

The restroom function is assigned to a Sanitor, also referred to as a restroom specialist.
They will perform their duties with the use of a maid cart and all the designed tools to maximize performance and proper sanitation. They also perform their duties in the most efficient route.

The remaining tasks are utility work. These activities are assigned to a Utility specialist with experience in more technical skills. In this example the Utility Specialist will take the same route as the Zone Cleaner but they would start and end at the elevators. In this example the Utility Specialist is spotting carpet and collecting trash.
