What Qualities Should You Look For In A Good Janitorial Supervisor?

Jean Hanson
Printer-Friendly Format

There are many qualities to look for in a good janitorial supervisor. You'll find that most people will be stronger in some areas than others, so keep in mind that whoever you choose will need support and training from you. By training them in the areas they're lacking in, you'll be helping them become a strong member of your supervisory staff.

Here are some qualities that all good supervisors should possess:

1.  Positive attitude. A good supervisor must have a positive attitude to keep morale up and employees happy. It's the key for the success of any business. When things go wrong (like employees not showing up to work, or having to handle customer complaints), a supervisor with a positive attitude will make all the difference to your business.

2.  Good communication skills. Both verbal and written communication skills are important because your supervisors must be able to interview, train, give accurate instructions, write reviews, write disciplinary actions and more.

3.  Technical knowledge. Since training is a big part of the supervisor's role, they must have the technical knowledge to train all aspects of the job and answer any questions employees may have.

4.  Liked and respected by co-workers and management. People want to work for someone they like and respect. If they don't get along with their supervisor, chances are the supervisor will have a hard time gaining their respect. Respect is earned over time so a person who has earned the respect of their peers and is well-liked possesses and important quality of a good supervisor.

5.  Drive to succeed. Anyone you choose to put in a supervisory position must possess an inner drive to succeed. This will help keep them motivated, plus they will strive to help the employees they supervise succeed as well.

6.  Thirst for knowledge. Supervisors must have the desire to learn or they will stagnate in their job, which will negatively impact their career advancement opportunities.

When you promote people into supervisory positions, keep these qualities in mind. It will make YOUR job much easier because you'll have positive, motivated supervisors ready to take on the tough job of helping you manage your growing business.
