Ergonomics and Back Pack Vacuums

Steve Hanson

Back pack vacuums have greatly increased worker productivity in the cleaning industry. Not only do they increase productivity, they contribute to safety as well. Ergonomics involves making workers comfortable and safe while they work, and most back pack manufacturers are making their vacuums with that in mind. Here are some of the ergonomic features of using back pack vacuums:

  • Back pack harness design is meant to work with the hips so the user's back is not carrying the bulk of the weight. Weight is transferred to the hips using a padded belt connected to the lower part of the back pack and secured around the user's waist. Shoulder straps simply keep the pack from twisting or rotating.
  • The padded waist belt should fasten snugly around the hips, allowing the shoulder straps to fit comfortably but loosely.
  • The primary weight of the unit should rest on the hips, not the shoulders or back. Ths shoulder straps serve mainly to balance the pack and prevent load shifting.
  • The back plate, if adjustable, should be positioned according to the height of the operator.
  • The upper body should stay upright with little twisting during vacuuming. Use a side-to-side fanning technique for maximum productivity without fatigue. Using a lightweight aluminum wand allows rapid vacuuming without back bending or other stressful movements.
  • When vacuuming under desks, bend at the knees rather than bending at the waist, as this puts more stress on the back. When bending at the knees, use the vacuum attachments to get into hard to reach areas.
  • Empty the bag frequently, as it lightens the load. Emptying the bag frequently also keeps the filter pores clean so it can effectively trap dust and maintain airflow for good suction and motor cooling.
  • Physical fitness is also important. Exercises that strengthen the arms and legs, abdominal muscles, and lower back are especially helpful for workers who use back pack vacuums. Aerobic workouts also increase endurance, which is helpful to those vacuuming for long periods of time every day.

Don't overlook the advantages of using equipment that is designed for user comfort. Fewer strains and accidents will result in lower worker's compensation costs, which is something all employers are looking for.
