Tips For Mopping With Microfiber Flat Mops
Steve Hanson

If you are used to mopping with regular string mops, you'll soon realize that mopping with microfiber flat mops is very different. Some employees of cleaning contractors complain about streaking, so the following are tips from a cleaning business owner on training employees on how to mop with microfiber flat mops.

  • Get the microfiber pad damp before attaching it to the flat mop. A simple soaking and wringing out will produce better results. A dry pad will simply absorb the cleaning solution that was sprayed down on the floor. As it dries into the microfiber, it also leaves streaks on the floor, and may even leave the floor feeling sticky. Since the pad is damp, it also reduces the amount of chemical needed on the floor. A damp microfiber will eliminate this problem.

  • Many new employees want to use the flathead mop as if they were using a dustmop (walking behind it pushing dirt to a corner). The "figure-8" method is the best method for mopping, regardless of which type of mop you use.

  • You must know when it is time to change a microfiber pad, even if it means changing during a mop job. Unlike traditional mop heads that stay on the mop handle throughout the entire mop process, microfiber pads can be changed quickly and easily (and should be changed often to avoid using an over-soiled pad).
  • If your floor streaks after flathead mopping, try using plain water and no chemical to rinse the floor. This usually does this trick when there is too much chemical on the floor that is causing the streaks.

  • As great as flathead mops are, sometimes the job requires a heavy duty traditional mop. For jobs like this, I use the traditional mop at least once a week for heavy dirt cleaning, and use the microfiber flat mop the rest of the week for routine maintenance. This combo style mopping has been very effective for me.
