Learn to have a successful business by attending a Cleaning Trade Show!

In Part One of this series of articles about trade shows, we discussed what trade shows are and how to prepare for them. In this article, we will pick up where we left off and discuss the things you need to know while you are attending the show.

First of all, be prepared for a long day or days. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you will be on your feet a lot. Business casual clothing is appropriate, but remember that you are representing the company and your appearance is important. Allow adequate room in your suitcase for freebies, literature, and product samples. While some exhibitors will provide a bag for such items, it would be wise to bring along a carryall for such items.

While at the show, here is a short list of tips to follow:

• An updated show guide will probably be provided when you arrive. Take some time to revise your plan if necessary.

• Make sure your badge is in plain sight while browsing trade show booths.

• If possible, request literature and samples be mailed instead of having to carry them with you. Most vendors will have a scanner so they can scan your badge and send you materials.

• Have a pen and notebook ready for notes and use business cards to jot down information on the back.

• Take a break after a few hours to refresh, have a snack and get some fresh air.

• Try to eat healthy foods. Most shows offer fruit for breakfast and salads for lunch. Take regular breaks to hydrate and make notes. The notes will help you write your trip report, and the water will keep you healthy and moving. Convention centers are notoriously dry, hot environments - be prepared.

• Leave the show a little early each day to avoid long lines for buses and cabs.

Let's face it--this is the big day. You've spent all this money and made all the necessary arrangements to be there. Now is not the time to be complacent or bashful.

Networking is a HUGE reason why we attend trade shows. Bring plenty of business cards and introduce yourself to as many people as you can, but be careful not to linger too long with exhibitors with whom you don't anticipate doing business. Take this opportunity to set up breakfast, lunch, or dinner meetings with fellow attendees. This is a good opportunity to "talk shop" with people you may not otherwise get an opportunity to be around. Share experiences and learn from each other. One added benefit--you might make new friends!

Now that the trade show is over, what do you need to do? FOLLOW THROUGH! What did you learn? What benefits did you get by attending? Here is a list of potential benefits from attending:

• You're investing in your business. You will learn things you'll never learn anywhere else.

• Stay ahead of the competition.

• Talk directly to manufactures to see what is new and what is coming. Talk to them about problems you might have had with their product or equipment. Get all your questions answered.

• Find out if your local suppliers are attending. It gives you a chance to network with them.

• Meet with consultants and other experts in the industry.

• Attend educational seminars.

• Find out what's going on in the industry and how it affects you.

• Come back to your business rejuvenated with new excitement and energy. It's like breathing new life into your business.

• Have a meeting with your employees to share what you learned at the seminars and trade show and get them involved in deciding what ideas to implement and how to implement those ideas for your business.
