If you work in the cleaning industry you must protect yourself from bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogens (BBP's) are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and body fluids, and can cause disease in humans.

Bloodborne Pathogens can enter the body through open cuts, skin abrasions, nicks, mucous membranes in your mouth, nose and eyes, and accidental punctures.

You are most likely to be exposed to BBP's in restrooms, medical offices, clinics, dental offices, hospitals, nursing homes, and funeral homes. Whenever you're in a situation where you may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens you must protect yourself by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), like latex gloves and protective eyeware.

Here are some tips to protect yourself:

• Never re-use disposable gloves - they are for one-time use. While wearing disposable gloves, keep your hands away from your face. When removing the gloves, turn them inside out and discard. Right after removing the gloves, wash your hands thoroughly.

• If you are responsible for removing bloodborne pathogen waste, use red can liners or containers that are marked with the biohazard warning. Handle these liners and containers with extra care. Hold can liners from the top - never support the bottom or sides of the liner with your hands or body.

• Never pick up sharp objects like broken glass or needles with your hands. Always use a broom and dust pan.

• If you think you have come into contact with bloodborne pathogens, wash the area with soap and water immediately. If contact is in the eyes, nose or mouth, flush the affected area with water.

  Be sure to train your employees on how to protect themselves and what to do if they become exposed. Instruct them to tell you or their supervisor right away. You must provide medical care in these instances.

  Proper training on safety precautions will help you and your employees stay safe. And remember to reinforce your safety procedures with your employees on a regular basis.
