Tips for Choosing an Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Steve Hanson
Printer-Friendly Format

If you're in need of an upright vacuum cleaner, then chances are you'll find dozens of choices as you begin your search. Make it easy on yourself by choosing one that has the features you need as a professional cleaner.

  • When choosing an upright vacuum cleaner, look for one that is light-weight. Nothing will wear you out faster than a heavy vacuum cleaner. Light weight vacuums are easier to handle and easier on your arms and back.
  • Look for a vacuum that has an ergonomic, light-weight handle that makes it easy to maneuver without placing extra strain on your hands and forearm.
  • Upright vacuums with built-in, easy-to-reach tools make your job easier. If you need to get into a tight area, just grab a crevice tool, attach it and vacuum up the area easily and quickly.
  • The longer the cord the better, 50ft is preferable.
  • Check to see how easy it is to buy or order parts and accessories. Also compare prices on these items.
  • For maximum indoor air quality, use micro-filter bags or HEPA filters.
  • Check the cost of replacing a HEPA filter. It may cost more to replace a HEPA filter on some vacuums than it would to buy replaceable bags.
  • Check the speed of the brushes. Speeds of 4000 + rpm is preferable to ensure dirt and soil is removed from carpet.
  • Don't get caught up in buying a vacuum with higher amps. Amps has to do with how much energy is used, it really doesn't have anything to do with performance.
  • If possible, buy a two-motor upright -- one motor creates suction, while the other rotates the brush. This will help to increase your productivity because it can pick up more soil. Single motor vacuums have to work harder so they're less efficient.
  • Look at the design. Your new vacuum should be able to get under furniture and vacuum close to walls easily.
