If you decide to offer window washing to your residential or commercial customers, then you need to know the proper procedures for cleaning windows, as well as the precautions you need to take so that you don't damage the windows you're cleaning. Nothing stings worse than the knowledge that you just ruined a window and now have to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to replace it!

So what precautions should you take?

• Never use abrasive cleaners on windows or window frames, as they can scratch the glass.
• When using a razor blade to scrape off construction residue or particles like bird poop, be sure that the window is wet. NEVER use a razor blade on a dry surface.
• The same goes for using #0000 steel wool. NEVER use steel wool on a dry surface. Always wet the window first, and be sure to only use #0000 steel wool. Anything else will scratch.
• Use caution when using acid cleaners. They should only be used in extreme circumstances like removing hard water spots. Follow manufacturers instructions to the letter and use gloves and goggles to protect your hands and eyes. If using an acid cleaner, be sure to protect the frame and wall below the window. Keep the acid from running over by placing an absorbent towel or drop cloth onto the window sill and floor.
• If using ammonia, use the same cautions as you do when using acid cleaners. Also be aware that ammonia can discolor the window putty with repeated use.
