Using slow speed buffers and high speed buffers/burnishers takes training and practice. Proper operation of the machines is critical in order get the results you're looking for and to keep the equipment in good working order.

Slow speed buffers use the rotation of the pad or brush to propel it across the floor. The operator can change the direction of the machine by gently raising or lowering the handle. The machine typically moves from side-to-side. If the operator wants to move the machine to the right he raises the handle. If the operator wants to move the machine to the left he lowers the handle.

When using a slow speed buffer for carpet cleaning, use the following method. Pre-spray the carpet and bonnet with the cleaning solution, and then attach a cotton bonnet to the buffer and scrub the area. Flip the bonnet to the other side when it becomes soiled so both sides are used. Put soiled bonnets in a plastic bag to be laundered.

High speed buffers/burnishers use the rear wheels to move the machine. Unlike slow speed buffers, the rear wheels remain in contact with the floor. Because the wheels remain on the floor, the machine will not move from side-to-side, but will move forward and backward. The operator simply has to walk the machine forward and backward, overlapping each pass.

Corners. Because of the size of floor care machines, they are not able to get into corners. Most cleaning contractors use a tool called a doodlebug, which is a square pad or brush attached to a handle.
